******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************
Southern gospel music is a music categorization within Christian music. The name came about because this specific type of music originated in the Southeastern United States where the lyrics are crafted to declare communal or personal faith on Christian life as well as the biblical teachings, aside from providing a Christian-centric alternative to the mainstream secular music.
Occasionally referred to as "quartet music" because of the traditional group setup which includes four mean and a piano. However, through the years, this music genre developed into a popular kind of music throughout the United States and the world, particularly among southern US residents and baby boomers. As a distinct music genre, Southern gospel music has been established as far back as 1910, the year when the first quartet performed professionally under the James D. Vaughan Music Publishing Company.
Having said that, this music has been existing for at least 35 years before 1910, and it was evident in Charles Davis Tillman’s work. Tillman is famed for the "The Old Time Religion" and wrote "Life's Railway to Heaven", aside from his 22 published songbooks. To differentiate it from its black gospel roots, this genre music is commonly called “white gospel” to attribute its musical development from the rural white people in the southern US.
